Spain's NxN Opens First Data Center in Madrid as Part of €500 Million Expansion Plan

Spanish data center operator NxN is marking a significant milestone with the launch of its first operational facility in Madrid, a move that underscores the company’s broader ambition to become a key player in Southern Europe’s digital infrastructure market. The new data center, set to open in September 2026, represents the company’s second facility overall and its first outside of Valencia, where its debut project is currently under construction.

Located near Juan Carlos I Park on Abelias Street, the facility will occupy the former Banco Popular headquarters, a building acquired by Santander in 2017. Santander had been exploring the sale or lease of the property earlier this year, though it remains unclear whether NxN has purchased or is leasing the space. The site spans 8,500 square meters (91,495 square feet) and will deliver 7.5 megawatts of capacity, featuring a 2N redundant design and a waterless cooling system. NxN has invested €20 million ($23.3 million) in the project.

“With this asset, NxN takes a decisive step in its operational entry into Spain, and it does so in Madrid, one of the main digital hubs in southern Europe,” said Javier Salas, CEO of NxN. “We are not simply deploying capacity; we are building critical infrastructure aimed at guaranteeing the highest levels of security and operational continuity.”

The Madrid facility is part of a larger strategic plan by NxN to invest up to €500 million ($584 million) over the next five years across Spain and Portugal. This investment roadmap complements the ongoing development of the company’s first project in Valencia, where construction has already started and is scheduled for completion in 2027. Plans for the Valencia data center were first announced in May 2024, and the company secured development approval last year.

NxN was founded in 2023 as a joint venture between Nethits Telecom Group and asset manager Adequita Capital. The company gained further financial backing last year, when infrastructure asset manager InfraRed acquired a majority stake. The new Madrid facility is expected to strengthen NxN’s position in the rapidly growing Spanish data center market, which is increasingly attracting investment due to its strategic location, connectivity, and rising demand for cloud and AI services.
