NTT Unveils Plans for Major 200MW Data Center Campus Near Tokyo

April 21, 2026

NTT Global Data Centers (NTT GDC), the data center arm of Japanese technology conglomerate NTT, has commenced work on a significant new 200-megawatt campus in the Inzai-Shiroi area of Chiba Prefecture, just outside Tokyo. The move underscores the intensifying demand for digital infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in key economic hubs like Greater Tokyo, driven by cloud adoption, AI workloads, and sustained enterprise digitalization.

The new campus, designated Tokyo TKY12, will comprise six buildings upon full build-out. The first phase of the development is slated to go live in 2030. This project is part of a broader expansion wave by NTT in Japan. Nearby, the 50MW TKY11 facility is scheduled to begin operations in April 2027, while ground was broken on a separate 24MW building in April 2025. The company is also advancing developments in western Japan, with sites around Osaka and Kyoto, and has acquired land in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, for a potential 100MW campus targeting a 2028 launch.

The scale of the TKY12 project reflects the massive capital and capacity required to support Japan's growing digital economy. NTT GDC's global footprint provides context for this expansion; the operator currently manages a portfolio exceeding 2 gigawatts of IT load across approximately 160 data centers spanning 20 markets worldwide, including the United States, multiple European nations, and key Asian territories.

Industry analysts view this concentrated investment in the Tokyo corridor as a strategic response to limited power availability and high real estate costs in central Tokyo. By developing large-scale campuses in surrounding prefectures like Chiba, operators like NTT can secure the space and power necessary for future hyperscale demand while maintaining proximity to the city's major network exchanges and financial customers. This development is expected to further solidify Japan's position as a leading data center market in the Asia-Pacific region.
