AirTrunk Expands into India with Acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra
April 20, 2026
In a strategic move to capture a share of one of the world's fastest-growing digital infrastructure markets, Asia-Pacific data center giant AirTrunk has announced its entry into India through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra. The deal underscores the intensifying competition and massive capital inflows targeting data centers to support hyperscale cloud and artificial intelligence workloads across the region.
The acquisition, finalized this week, sees the Blackstone-owned AirTrunk take over Lumina CloudInfra, a large-scale data center developer also backed by the private equity giant. While financial terms were not disclosed, the transaction provides AirTrunk with immediate access to Lumina's development pipeline, existing customer contracts, and operational capabilities within India. The combined platform will continue to be supported by long-term capital from Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB).
AirTrunk, which was itself acquired by Blackstone and CPPIB for a record $16.1 billion in 2024, operates a significant portfolio across the APAC region. Its campuses are located in Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Hong Kong, Johor (Malaysia), Tokyo, and Osaka. Lumina, founded by Blackstone in late 2022, had outlined an ambitious plan to develop 600 megawatts of data center capacity across India. Its project pipeline includes sites in key markets such as Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai. Specific developments include a 60MW project in Navi Mumbai, a reported 60MW facility planned in Mumbai's Chandivali area, and a 16-acre campus site acquired this year in Chennai.
Robin Khuda, Founder & CEO of AirTrunk, stated, "India is one of the largest and fastest growing markets for hyperscale and AI infrastructure worldwide, and expanding in this market is a significant milestone for AirTrunk’s broader APAC strategy. By acquiring Lumina CloudInfra, we are uniquely positioned to deliver the scale, speed, and performance our customers need." Sujeet Deshpande, Co-founder & CEO of Lumina CloudInfra, added that the merger combines local expertise with a global platform, enhancing capabilities in design, construction, and operations while providing access to AirTrunk's international customer network.
The deal significantly bolsters Blackstone's already substantial footprint in digital infrastructure. Peng Wei Tan, Senior Managing Director for Real Estate at Blackstone, noted the transaction reinforces digital infrastructure as one of the firm's highest-conviction investment themes. Blackstone has invested over $130 billion in data center assets since 2018 and provided more than $10 billion in debt financing to sector players, with a portfolio that includes stakes in companies like QTS, Vnet, and Rowan.
For the industry, AirTrunk's entry into India via acquisition signals a maturation of the market, where global operators are seeking established platforms to accelerate growth. It highlights the critical role of large-scale, well-capitalized players in building the foundational infrastructure required to support India's rapid digitalization and the surging regional demand for AI-ready data center capacity.
