Google Breaks Ground on $15 Billion AI-Ready Data Center Hub in India
April 7, 2026
Google is poised to commence construction on a landmark $15 billion data center initiative in India's Andhra Pradesh state, marking a significant escalation in the global race to build infrastructure capable of powering the next generation of artificial intelligence services. The project underscores India's rapidly growing importance as a strategic digital infrastructure market and a key battleground for cloud and AI supremacy.
According to a report by the Economic Times, the land for the massive development has been formally transferred to Google's subsidiary, Raiden Infotech India Private Limited, with groundbreaking ceremonies scheduled for April 28, 2026. The tech giant first announced its plans for Andhra Pradesh in October 2025, outlining a $15 billion investment in data centers and associated digital infrastructure. The initiative is being developed in collaboration with Indian partners AdaniConneX and Bharti Airtel, with the goal of establishing a major "AI hub" in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam.
The project's immense scale is reflected in its planned capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) and its structure as three interconnected campus sites around Visakhapatnam. Sources indicate the campuses will be located in Adivivaram, Tarluvada, and the Rambilli–Achyutapuram cluster, with land allocations reported at approximately 160 acres, 266.6 acres, and 174.8 acres, respectively. The initial construction phase is expected to begin at either the Tarluvada or Rambilli site. In a related move, the Adani Group confirmed in December 2025 its commitment to invest up to $5 billion specifically in the campus development.
Beyond the data halls, the comprehensive project includes plans for three high-capacity submarine cables with dedicated landing stations, metro fiber networks, and other critical telecommunications infrastructure. The entire complex is targeted for commissioning by July 2028. This expansion builds upon Google Cloud's existing Indian cloud regions in Mumbai and Delhi, and aligns with its strategy to launch a sovereign AI cloud with Airtel Business later this year. Furthermore, the Indian leg of Google's Blue Raman subsea cable is slated to become operational in Mumbai in the fourth quarter of 2025.
The development signals a major vote of confidence in Andhra Pradesh, which is emerging as a focal point for data center investment in India. The state has recently attracted attention from other major players, including reports of a planned 1GW facility by Digital Connexion and a potential 500MW data center project involving Meta and Sify Technologies. Google's move is set to dramatically accelerate the region's digital economy and provide critical, low-latency infrastructure needed to serve India's vast and growing demand for cloud and AI services.
