Tetracore, Huawei to Build $400 Million Gas-Powered Data Center in Nigeria
March 26, 2026
A major new data center project in southwestern Nigeria underscores the critical intersection of energy infrastructure and digital growth in one of Africa's most dynamic markets. West African energy firm Tetracore Energy Group has announced a $400 million partnership with global technology giant Huawei and local IT solutions provider Inspirive Technologies to develop a 20-megawatt facility.
The data center will be constructed at Tetracore's energy park in Atakobo, Orgun State, with an expected build timeline of 10 to 12 months. Designed to meet Tier III availability standards, the facility aims to address surging domestic demand for local data storage and processing from both Nigerian enterprises and public-sector organizations.
A defining feature of the project is its dedicated on-site power supply. The data center will be powered by a 100MW independent power plant located within the gas-powered energy park, which has a processing capacity of 6.2 million standard cubic feet per day. This integrated model highlights a growing trend of leveraging behind-the-meter generation to ensure reliability in regions with constrained grid infrastructure.
“Sustainable digital transformation is fundamentally dependent on reliable energy infrastructure,” said Olakunle Williams, President and CEO of Tetracore Energy Group. “This project reflects our ability to integrate energy and technology at scale, creating platforms that enable long-term economic growth.” The data center marks Tetracore's first foray into the digital infrastructure sector.
The facility is poised to serve a broad cross-section of Nigeria's economy, including finance, telecommunications, government, technology, startups, and educational platforms. “This development marks a major milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s digital backbone,” said Williams Abiola, CTO of Inspirive Technologies. “By combining local expertise with global technology partnerships, we are delivering a scalable, world-class data center.”
A Huawei Nigeria representative added, “Huawei is proud to contribute its global expertise in data centre technologies to this project. Together, we are delivering a high-performance, energy-efficient facility aligned with international standards.”
The investment arrives as Nigeria solidifies its position as one of Africa's fastest-growing data center markets, currently hosting approximately 25 facilities operated by 15 companies. This project represents a significant capital injection into the sector, contrasting with but complementing other recent developments, such as Equinix's planned $22 million facility in Lagos announced last November.
