Google-Linked Firm Acquires 430 Acres for Major Data Center Campus Near Kansas City

Google-Linked Firm Acquires 430 Acres for Major Data Center Campus Near Kansas City March 20, 2026 In a significant expansion of its US Midwest infrastructure, a company affiliated with Google has secured a large land parcel for a new hyperscale data center campus. The move underscores the relentless demand for computing capacity driven by cloud services and artificial intelligence, with tech giants aggressively securing sites that offer ample space, power, and favorable economic conditions. Shenandoah Computing LLC, a Delaware-based entity known to be associated with Google, has finalized the purchase of 430 acres of land near Kansas City International Airport in Missouri. The site, acquired from developer Hunt Midwest and located southwest of Highway 92, had long been rumored as the location for the previously code-named "Project Kestrel." Google has not publicly commented on the development. Plans for the campus involve phased construction of five data center buildings, each spanning 500,000 square feet (approximately 46,450 square meters). A 44.2-acre portion of the land will be dedicated to utility provider Evergy for building an on-site electrical substation. While no precise construction timeline has been announced, local officials indicate work could begin within the year. The project is expected to create 50 full-time jobs per construction phase and has committed to sourcing at least 50 percent of its energy from carbon-neutral sources. To secure the investment, the project was granted substantial tax incentives, including a 35-year exemption on real, personal property, and construction material sales taxes. These benefits have drawn some local criticism. In November 2025, Platte County Presiding Commissioner Scott Fricker argued against the agreement, stating it favored one of the world's "largest and richest corporations" at the expense of local residents. The acquisition is part of a broader building spree by Google in the Kansas City region. Shenandoah Computing is also behind the nearby Project Micah, a 500-acre, 1.56 million-square-foot campus with a total power capacity of 700MW, where construction began in February. Furthermore, the company owns another 315-acre site in the Northland area, where it gained permission in late 2023 to develop up to 1.435 million square feet of data center space.
