STT GDC Breaks Ground on Major New Data Center Campus in Mumbai Metropolitan Region

March 18, 2026

In a significant move to expand India's digital infrastructure, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) has commenced construction on its third data center campus in the Mumbai region. This development underscores the intense demand for high-capacity computing facilities driven by the rapid adoption of cloud services, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation across the Indian economy.

The new campus, located in Palava City—a smart city development between Thane and Navi Mumbai—spans 46 acres and represents a long-term strategic investment for the Asia-Pacific data center operator. The company has committed a total investment of Rs 5,000 crore (approximately $540 million) to the project. The campus is master-planned to eventually scale to approximately 400 MW of IT load, with the initial phase set to deliver 50 MW of critical IT capacity.

STT GDC India announced the groundbreaking this week, marking the start of work on the first data center building at the Palava site. The company acquired the land last year from local real estate developer Lodha. In a statement, STT GDC emphasized the strategic importance of the location, noting, “Strategically located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, this development strengthens Maharashtra’s leadership as India’s premier digital infrastructure hub and accelerates Mumbai’s rise as a global center for AI, cloud, and next-generation digital workloads.” The area is attracting significant industry interest, with Amazon also having secured land in Palava for its own data center development.

This new campus expands STT GDC's already substantial footprint in India's financial capital. The company currently operates two other data center parks in the vicinity, one in Mumbai and another in Navi Mumbai. Nationwide, STT GDC's India division boasts over 400 MW of critical IT load either in operation or under development across a portfolio of 30 facilities in 10 cities. The groundbreaking follows last month's complete acquisition of STT GDC by investment firm KKR and Singaporean telecommunications giant Singtel, a transaction that is expected to provide further capital and strategic support for aggressive expansion.

The project's scale highlights the massive capital inflows and construction activity defining India's data center sector. As demand for hyperscale and AI-ready infrastructure surges, developments like the Palava campus are critical for supporting the country's growing digital ecosystem and positioning it as a key node in the global data infrastructure network.
