AWS Files Plans for Two Major Data Center Projects in San Antonio

March 18, 2026

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has taken significant steps toward expanding its data center footprint in the competitive Texas market, filing plans for two new facilities in San Antonio with a combined projected investment of approximately $90 million. The move underscores the continued strategic expansion of hyperscalers into secondary markets with favorable conditions for digital infrastructure.

According to filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), the two proposed projects are located at separate sites within the city. The first, named "Bitter Blue" at 12807 Donop Road, is a confirmed AWS development filed directly by Amazon Data Services, the corporate entity typically used for such applications. This facility is slated to be a two-story, nearly 120,000-square-foot (11,150-square-meter) single-tenant data center, with an estimated construction cost of $65 million. Work was expected to commence in March 2026, targeting completion by February 2029.

The second project, located at 1535 NW Crossroads and referred to as "COPT Potranco," involves a $25 million investment for a two-story, 141,979-square-foot (13,190-square-meter) core and shell building intended for a future single-tenant computer center. While the filing applicant is real estate investment trust COPT, industry observers strongly link the project to AWS. The San Antonio Express News notes that COPT is a known landlord for AWS, and the listed tenant contact on the filing is an AWS-employed engineer. Furthermore, the site is connected to a nearby property at 7400 Potranco Road where Amazon has previously filed for a data center. Construction for the COPT Potranco project is planned to begin in October 2026 and finish by November 2027. Design firm Gensler is serving as the architect for both developments.

The filings signal AWS's deepening commitment to the San Antonio region, a market increasingly favored by major cloud providers due to its growing infrastructure and strategic location. Amazon has been assembling its presence in the area since at least October 2020, when it acquired the Bitter Blue property. These latest plans align with earlier reports of the company scouting multiple sites in the vicinity. The expansion also places AWS in direct competition with rivals like Microsoft, which already operates several data centers in the area and has recently filed for additional facilities. This activity highlights San Antonio's emergence as a vital, growing hub within Texas's broader data center landscape, attracting billions in investment from the world's largest cloud providers.
