Wellington, Kansas Considers Pioneering 3D-Printed Data Center Project
March 17, 2026
A novel proposal for a 3D-printed data center campus in Wellington, Kansas, is set to go before the city council this week, marking a significant step in applying advanced construction techniques to critical digital infrastructure. The project highlights the industry's ongoing search for innovative methods to accelerate deployment and potentially reduce costs amid soaring demand for computing capacity.
According to initial reports, the Wellington city council will discuss an energy sales agreement with Canadian 3D construction firm Cormor. The project is a collaboration between Cormor and Florida-based data center operator Data Shelter, operating under their joint venture, Cormor Data Shelter (CDS). The proposed site is a parcel just north of the city limits, within its utility service territory.
The facility is designed as a Tier IV-quality data center, emphasizing maximum reliability. Plans indicate an initial capacity of 14.7MW delivered through modular 5MW pods, with a long-term potential to scale to 100MW. The 31,000 square foot (2,880 square meter) building would house up to 384 racks, supporting high-density deployments of 160kW per rack. Key technical features include a proprietary waterless cooling system and a flywheel-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
In a LinkedIn post last year, Cormor noted that CDS has multiple projects in late-stage planning, ranging from 15 to 30MW. The Wellington site is listed on the company's website as CDS's inaugural project.
The use of 3D printing for constructing data centers remains exceptionally rare globally, positioning this project at the forefront of industrial construction innovation. If approved and built, it could serve as a benchmark for future developments seeking faster, more adaptable building methodologies. The move comes as regions like Kansas increasingly compete for data center investments, balancing local utility agreements with the infrastructure's substantial power demands.
