New Data Center Campus Proposed Near Major QTS Development in Northumberland, UK
March 13, 2026
A new data center campus has been proposed in Northumberland, northeast England, signaling continued investment and competitive activity in a region fast becoming a significant hub for digital infrastructure in the UK. The move highlights the strategic appeal of areas with available land and power capacity as demand for computing resources grows.
According to a report by the Northumberland Gazette, planning consultancy Lichfields has distributed informational leaflets to residents in the West Sleekburn area, revealing early-stage plans for the development. While a formal planning application has not yet been submitted and the developer behind the project remains unnamed, the proposed site is described as agricultural land situated directly south of the River Wansbeck and north of Brock Lane, with the A189 road to the east.
The location of this new proposal is strategically significant, positioned approximately one mile north of a massive, planned data center campus by QTS Realty Trust. That neighboring project, a $13 billion investment on the site of the former Blyth Power Station, is set to encompass 540,000 square meters (5.8 million square feet). At full build-out, the QTS campus could host up to ten data center buildings with a combined IT capacity of 720MW, establishing a major cluster of digital assets.
The emergence of a second major project in close proximity suggests that Northumberland is being viewed by investors and operators as a prime location for data center expansion. This clustering effect can drive further regional investment in power and connectivity infrastructure, potentially attracting more technology companies to the area. However, the proposals will also likely intensify scrutiny regarding their impact on local communities, land use, and energy grids. Full details on the scale, timeline, and design of the newly proposed campus are awaited.
