atNorth to Build Second Stockholm Data Center, SWE02, Targeting Q4 2027 Launch
January 29, 2026
The Nordic data center market continues to expand rapidly, driven by growing demand for high-performance computing and sustainable digital infrastructure. This expansion is particularly pronounced in Sweden, where favorable climate conditions, robust renewable energy grids, and strategic geographic positioning attract major operators seeking to serve both regional and international clients.
This week, Nordic data center operator atNorth announced plans to construct a new 30-megawatt (MW) facility in Stockholm, Sweden. The project, designated SWE02, is scheduled to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2027. It will be built near the company's existing SWE01 data center in the Kista suburb, which opened in March 2022 with 12MW of capacity across 6,400 square meters. The development will include a new substation to be constructed by Swedish grid operator Ellevio.
The new facility underscores the strategic importance of the Stockholm region. AtNorth's CEO, Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, stated, "The expansion of our presence in Stockholm is a clear reflection of the growing demand for responsible data center operators who can combine technical excellence with sustainable operations." A key feature of SWE02 will be its heat reuse capabilities, developed in collaboration with local energy company Stockholm Exergi. Peter Sivengård, business project manager at Stockholm Exergi, commented, "We are proud to collaborate with atNorth to recycle heat to meet a local need within Stockholm. By working together, we can ensure efficient use of our resources."
The development is also welcomed by local government. Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm, noted that the project "will bring employment opportunities for our community and further position Stockholm as a hub for digital infrastructure excellence."
Upon completion of SWE02, atNorth will have eleven data centers in operation or under development across the Nordics, including sites in Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, and Norway. The company's growth reflects a broader industry trend where sustainability and energy efficiency are becoming critical competitive differentiators, especially as power constraints challenge other European markets. This expansion solidifies atNorth's position in a competitive Stockholm landscape that includes giants like Digital Realty and Equinix, the latter of which has been reportedly vying to acquire the Nordic operator.
