nLighten Secures 24/7 Renewable Energy Deal with Uniper for German Data Centers

nLighten Secures 24/7 Renewable Energy Deal with Uniper for German Data Centers January 27, 2026 In a significant move for the European data center industry's sustainability drive, edge infrastructure specialist nLighten has entered into a comprehensive 24/7 renewable energy supply agreement with German energy major Uniper. The deal underscores the growing pressure on digital infrastructure operators to move beyond annual renewable energy certificates and guarantee a constant, traceable supply of clean power. The agreement, announced today, will see Uniper supply renewable electricity to all ten of nLighten's edge data center facilities across Germany, including sites in Berlin, Munich, and Stuttgart. A key component of the deal is a guaranteed baseload supply of hydroelectric power, supplemented by standard renewable energy. Uniper will also provide nLighten with detailed, hourly energy attribute data certified by independent body TÜV Süd, replacing traditional annual certification models. Francesco Marasco, nLighten's VP of Energy Operations and Sustainability, stated, "This partnership represents an important step forward for our German operations. The baseload hydropower component provides security and transparency that is particularly valuable in the German market." He emphasized that the structure ensures "a consistent foundation of carbon-free energy" even during periods of low generation from variable sources like wind and solar. Andreas Gemballa, CCO at Uniper Energy Sales, commented, "By combining flexible power supply with guaranteed base load hydropower and hourly traceability, our 24/7 solution offers the accountability and security that are essential for today's modern digital infrastructure." The partnership allows nLighten to scale its renewable energy procurement in line with demand growth across its German portfolio, with Uniper acting as the balancing agent. The deal marks nLighten's latest step in a series of green power agreements for its European footprint, which spans 34 data centers across Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Belgium. The company, owned by I Squared Capital, previously signed similar 24/7 supply deals with Axpo for its French portfolio and with Conrad Energy for its ten UK facilities. This pattern highlights a broader industry shift towards granular, time-matched renewable energy procurement as data center operators face increasing scrutiny over their carbon emissions and energy sourcing strategies.
