AWS Unveils Major 2.5 Million Sq Ft Data Center Campus Plan in Pennsylvania January 26, 2026 Amazon Web Services (AWS) is advancing its significant infrastructure build-out in Pennsylvania with plans for a new, expansive data center campus, underscoring the relentless demand for cloud and AI compute capacity in strategic U.S. markets. The cloud giant is proposing to construct a data center campus spanning 2.5 million square feet (approximately 232,257 square meters) on a 346-acre site in Kline Township, Schuylkill County. According to local reports, the campus could comprise up to ten individual data center buildings. AWS acquired the land, located off Lofty Road near Interstate 81 and State Route 309, in 2025 for $178 million. The site was previously slated for a large warehouse development. Speaking at a Kline Township Supervisor meeting on January 17, Becky Ford, director of AWS’s Economic Development team, outlined the company's approach. "We worked within the footprint to design a data center campus that fit within what was already approved and zoned and, to some extent, permitted," Ford stated, noting that some permits remain to be secured. The development is expected to create an estimated 25 to 30 full-time jobs per building. This move is a direct component of AWS's broader $20 billion investment pledge for Pennsylvania data centers, announced in June 2025. While initial focus areas included Salem Township and Falls Township, the Kline Township plan demonstrates the geographic expansion of that commitment. Amazon has invested over $26 billion in the state since 2010 across infrastructure and employee compensation. The development signals a continued aggressive expansion by hyperscalers into key regions, leveraging existing infrastructure and zoning pathways. AWS is concurrently developing another massive campus on a 1,600-acre site in nearby Salem Township, where it plans to build 15 data center buildings over the next decade following a rezoning approval in May 2024. The company is also reportedly eyeing potential development in adjacent Banks Township, indicating a long-term, multi-site strategy for eastern Pennsylvania. Source: datacenterdynamics
