Google Cloud Launches First Thailand Region, Anchoring $1 Billion AI Infrastructure Push

Google Cloud has inaugurated its first cloud region in Thailand, a strategic move to capture the Southeast Asian nation's burgeoning digital economy and position itself as a critical enabler of its artificial intelligence ambitions. The launch in Bangkok, featuring three availability zones, represents a key milestone in the company's previously announced $1 billion investment to build data center and cloud infrastructure in the country.
The new region provides in-country access to Google's full suite of cloud services and is integrated into its global fiber network, including the upcoming TalayLink subsea cable connecting Thailand to Australia. This infrastructure is designed to offer Thai enterprises, startups, and public sector institutions low-latency connectivity and a local option for data residency—a crucial factor for industries like finance governed by regulations such as Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). Karthik Narain, Chief Product and Business Officer at Google Cloud, stated, "With access to Google Cloud’s leading cloud and AI technologies, we're giving Thai organizations a foundation for growth in the AI era, allowing them to innovate faster with greater control over their data."
The economic impact is projected to be significant. According to commissioned research cited by Google, the new cloud region is expected to contribute 1.4 trillion Thai baht (approximately $41 billion) to the national economy over the next five years and support the creation of up to 130,000 jobs annually. Major local players have already signaled their adoption. Kasikorn Bank's technology arm, KBTG, highlighted the region's role in streamlining compliance with central bank standards. "It provides us with robust control over data residency and privacy," said KBTG Executive Chairman Voranuch Dejakaisaya. Similarly, True Digital Group, part of telecom operator True Corporation, called the launch a "watershed moment," providing a secure foundation to unify data sets for AI-driven solutions.
Beyond infrastructure, Google is actively cultivating the local AI ecosystem. The region serves as a gateway to its AI tools like the Vertex AI platform and Gemini models. This is complemented by skill-building initiatives such as the PanyaThAI program for enterprises and the ChaiyoGCP training labs, through which Thai developers have already completed over 110,000 modules, more than 70% focused on AI. The company aims to increase that number to 125,000 by mid-2026. For Google Cloud, the Thailand region is a dual-purpose investment: a direct play for the country's cloud market and a long-term strategic bet on nurturing a generation of developers and businesses anchored to its AI platform.
