German Health District Deploys Modular Micro Data Center to Modernize IT Infrastructure
January 23, 2026
The modernization of public sector IT infrastructure is gaining momentum across Europe, driven by the need for resilient, secure, and space-efficient computing solutions. This trend is particularly critical for health services, which require uninterrupted access to data and applications to serve their communities effectively.
In a recent deployment, Germany's Data Center Group (DCG) has successfully installed a self-contained micro data center for the public health department of the Harz District, a highland region in northern Germany. The project was initiated after the district's health service, which expanded during the Covid-19 pandemic, found its existing server room inadequate for current IT demands.
Following a public tender process, DCG was selected to provide its "DC IT Safe 56/62 HE" solution. This turnkey, modular unit occupies less than two square meters of floor space and features a protective outer shell designed to safeguard the internal hardware from fire, water, and dust. The system, which comes in 56U and 62U rack configurations, was integrated with the district's existing IT infrastructure. Despite complex requirements and a fixed schedule, DCG completed the deployment on time.
The new micro data center provides the Harz District health department with an independent and secure IT environment. Equipped with integrated cooling and an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), the unit ensures critical health service operations can continue during a power outage or other disruptions, replacing the functionality of the outdated server room.
“We are very pleased with the project outcome. It was a long but successful journey – the collaboration with the Data Center Group was consistently positive," said Heike Breiting, project manager at the Harz District.
This deployment underscores a broader shift towards edge and modular data center solutions, especially for government and enterprise entities outside major urban hubs. Such compact, pre-fabricated units offer a faster path to digital modernization, enhanced physical security, and operational resilience without the need for extensive construction or dedicated facility space.
