Prime Data Centers Announces €1.8 Billion AI-Ready Facility in Finland
January 15, 2026
As global demand for high-density computing, particularly for artificial intelligence workloads, continues to surge, data center operators are increasingly targeting the Nordic region for its abundant renewable energy resources and favorable climate for cooling. This strategic expansion underscores the region's growing importance in the global digital infrastructure landscape.
US-based operator Prime Data Centers has unveiled plans for a major new data center development in Järvenpää, Finland, marking a significant step in its European expansion. The company, in collaboration with its local partner Nordic real estate investor Brunswick Real Estate, is targeting a 12-hectare plot within the Vähänummi industrial area, located approximately 40 kilometers north of Helsinki.
The proposed facility represents a substantial investment, with Prime reportedly aiming to commit €1.8 billion (approximately $2 billion) to the project. Nicholas Laag, founder and CEO of Prime Data Centers, stated, "We are pleased to announce the Järvenpää data center project and launch the environmental impact assessment." Construction is slated to begin in 2027, pending the completion of the environmental review and necessary permits.
In a move aligning with regional sustainability priorities, the project includes plans for waste heat recovery and a potential connection to the local district heating network in Järvenpää. The city's mayor, Iiris Laukkanen, expressed support for the initiative, noting, "The city of Järvenpää is positive about the Prime Data Centers investment project. If implemented, the project would strengthen the city's vitality and employment and produce significant technological impacts nationwide."
This Finnish project is a key part of Prime's aggressive growth strategy beyond its core US markets in California, Illinois, Texas, and Arizona. The company entered the European market in 2023 with a planned 124MW campus in Saeby, Denmark, and is also developing a 40MW facility in Madrid, Spain. The Järvenpää development signals a deepening commitment to the Nordics, a region attracting major investments due to its reliable green power grid and potential for efficient, large-scale operations critical for next-generation computing.
