QTS Seeks Approval for Major Expansion of Georgia Data Center Campus January 15, 2026 In a significant move underscoring the sustained demand for digital infrastructure in the Southeastern United States, data center operator QTS has filed plans to substantially expand its footprint in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The company, owned by investment giant Blackstone, is seeking to develop a new, large-scale facility adjacent to its existing campus in Fayetteville, Georgia. This week, QTS, through its entity QTS Eastwood, LLC, submitted a Development of Regional Impact application to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for a project named "ATL2 East." The proposed facility is planned for a 313-acre site west of Veterans Parkway in Fayetteville, located approximately 20 miles south of Atlanta. According to the filing, the project entails the construction of a data center spanning 2 million square feet (approximately 185,800 square meters), with a potential completion date set for 2029. The expansion highlights QTS's deepening commitment to the Georgia market, where it already operates two campuses: a major facility on Jefferson Street in central Atlanta offering over 275MW of capacity, and a 385,000 sq ft site in Suwanee. The new Fayetteville project appears to be an addition to the company's ambitious "Project Excalibur," a master plan filed in 2022 for a 615-acre campus featuring 6.6 million sq ft of data center space across 16 buildings and a total capacity of around 250MW. QTS acquired the land for this broader development in August 2022 for $153.8 million. Industry analysts view this filing as a strategic response to the booming demand for cloud and AI computing capacity, particularly in key interconnection hubs like Atlanta. The expansion solidifies Georgia's position as a top-tier data center destination, driven by favorable power availability, tax incentives, and robust fiber connectivity. Such large-scale developments are critical for supporting the next wave of technological innovation but also bring increased scrutiny regarding their energy consumption and community impact.
