Meta Secures Land for Major Expansion of New Mexico Data Center Campus

January 15, 2026

In a strategic move to bolster its AI and cloud computing infrastructure, Meta Platforms Inc. has acquired a significant land parcel adjacent to its existing Los Lunas, New Mexico data center campus, signaling a major forthcoming expansion. The deal underscores the relentless demand for hyperscale data center capacity driven by the artificial intelligence boom, pushing tech giants to secure and develop new sites aggressively.

According to a report by Albuquerque Business First, Meta, through its known affiliate Greater Kudu LLC, purchased a 475-acre plot of land directly adjoining its current campus. The transaction, brokered by real estate firm CBRE, was finalized in December 2025. This acquisition paves the way for the potential addition of two new data center buildings to the campus, a plan that has been under consideration for some time.

The expansion has been financially prepped through substantial public financing. In 2025, the Village of Los Lunas approved the issuance of Industrial Revenue Bonds (IRBs) worth $7.5 billion to fund the project, following an application submitted in October 2024. This financing mechanism is not new to the site; since the campus's inception in 2016, approximately $70 billion worth of IRBs have been utilized to develop its existing seven buildings.

This planned growth reinforces Meta's long-term commitment to the Los Lunas region, situated south of Albuquerque. While New Mexico is not traditionally a primary data center hub compared to states like Virginia or Texas, the sustained investment by a hyperscaler of Meta's scale highlights the industry's broader geographical diversification in search of suitable land, power, and favorable economic conditions. The expansion will significantly increase the campus's total footprint and computational capacity, supporting Meta's escalating needs for data processing and storage.
