BorderPlex Launches Major Renewable Sourcing Initiative for New Mexico Data Center Campus
January 2, 2026
As the data center industry faces mounting pressure to reduce its carbon footprint and secure reliable power for expansion, major renewable energy procurement programs are becoming critical strategic moves. U.S. developer BorderPlex Digital Assets has launched one of the most ambitious such efforts in the Southwest, targeting up to 1 gigawatt of clean power capacity for its operations in New Mexico.
The company announced the launch of “Project Green,” a phased program to source renewable energy for its data center portfolio. The initial phase aims to secure 500 megawatts of generation capacity by 2028, with plans to scale the initiative to a full 1 gigawatt by 2032. This scale would position it among the largest dedicated renewable energy arrays in the state. The program will evaluate a range of generation sources including solar, wind, geothermal, and hybrid configurations.
BorderPlex stated it expects to issue a Request for Information (RFI) by January 16, 2026, to gather market input, followed by a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) for selected solutions. In a statement, the company framed the project as essential to its strategy: “Project Green is a priority initiative to advance renewable power as part of a portfolio-based approach to power generation and storage that delivers infrastructure affordability and reliability.” The company added, “BorderPlex Digital Assets believes in the power of ‘and’ – by utilizing advanced technologies, we can build infrastructure for economic growth and deliver sustainable environmental outcomes.”
The initiative is tied to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the State of New Mexico in February of last year, which set parameters for developing reliable, low-carbon electricity. The power generated is intended to support new data center demand, micro-grid configurations, and potentially broader utility partners.
The primary beneficiary is BorderPlex’s flagship “Project Jupiter” data center campus under development in Doña Ana County. The proposed campus, spanning 1,400 acres near Sunland Park, is planned to include four data center buildings, micro-grid facilities, natural gas power plants, a battery storage center, and a desalination plant. The project has secured financial backing from Stack Infrastructure.
However, the development has faced local opposition. Some residents have sued the Doña Ana County Commission, alleging procedural irregularities in the approval of funding mechanisms and tax rebates for the project.
For the data center sector, BorderPlex’s large-scale, long-term procurement model highlights a growing trend of developers directly shaping the energy grid to meet their massive power demands sustainably. Such moves are crucial for the industry’s license to operate in power-constrained regions and for meeting corporate environmental goals.
