Meta Acquires Singapore-Based AI Startup Manus to Enhance Its AI Agent Capabilities
December 30, 2025
In a strategic move to bolster its artificial intelligence portfolio, Meta Platforms, Inc. announced on Monday its agreement to acquire Manus, a Singapore-based AI startup specializing in general-purpose AI agents. The acquisition underscores the intensifying race among technology giants to secure cutting-edge AI talent and technology, a critical front in the competition to dominate the next generation of digital services and productivity tools.
The deal, for which financial terms were not disclosed, will see Meta take over the operation and sales of the Manus service. The social media and technology conglomerate plans to integrate Manus's AI agent technology across its consumer and business product ecosystem, including its Meta AI assistant. This follows Meta's earlier significant investment this year in data-labeling firm Scale AI, a deal that valued that startup at approximately $29 billion.
Manus develops a sophisticated AI agent designed to function as an autonomous digital employee, capable of executing complex tasks like research and process automation with minimal human prompting. Earlier in 2025, the startup launched its agent, publicly claiming its performance exceeded that of OpenAI's AI agent, DeepResearch. As part of its marketing strategy, the company, which is a subsidiary of Beijing Butterfly Effect Technology Ltd Co, demonstrated its capabilities by completing dozens of tasks for users on the social media platform X free of charge.
The acquisition highlights a notable trend of Chinese-founded tech firms, like Manus, establishing domiciles in Singapore in recent years. This strategic relocation to the trade-focused city-state is widely viewed as a measure to mitigate operational risks stemming from ongoing Sino-U.S. geopolitical tensions, ensuring smoother global business continuity.
For the industry, Meta's purchase of Manus signals a deepening focus on developing and deploying practical, agentic AI that can be embedded directly into user workflows. Integrating such advanced automation technology could significantly enhance productivity features within Meta's business suites and make its consumer AI offerings more competitive, potentially reshaping user expectations for AI-assisted digital interactions.
