AirTrunk Secures Melbourne Site for Major 354MW Hyperscale Data Center Expansion
December 24, 2025
Asia-Pacific hyperscale data center specialist AirTrunk has announced a significant expansion of its Australian footprint with the acquisition of a site in Melbourne for a new 354-megawatt campus. The move underscores the intense demand for AI-ready digital infrastructure in key markets and reinforces Australia's strategic push to become a global hub for advanced computing.
The new facility, to be named MEL2, will be AirTrunk's second campus in Melbourne. The project represents a capital investment exceeding A$5 billion (approximately US$3.3 billion) and will bring the company's total planned capacity in the city to over 630MW. Once operational, MEL2 will complement AirTrunk's existing Australian campuses in Sydney and Melbourne, providing global cloud and AI customers with greater geographical diversity and scale.
In a statement, AirTrunk founder and CEO Robin Khuda linked the expansion directly to the nation's technological ambitions. "Australia has set bold ambitions to become a global AI hub, and demand for AI‑ready infrastructure continues to grow," Khuda said. "MEL2 is part of our response. Working closely with Invest Victoria, we’re expanding in Melbourne to support Australia’s AI future while creating new opportunities for local business and communities."
The announcement follows closely on AirTrunk's recent plans to develop a second data center in Osaka, Japan, signaling an aggressive regional growth strategy. Following the completion of MEL2, AirTrunk will operate a portfolio of over 1.2 gigawatts of capacity across five campuses in Australia. This includes its SYD1 (121MW), SYD2 (158MW), and SYD3 (330MW) campuses in Sydney, alongside the existing MEL1 (276MW) and the new MEL2 in Melbourne.
The company, founded in 2018, was acquired last year by a consortium led by Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in a landmark deal valued at US$16.1 billion, highlighting the immense investor confidence in the Asia-Pacific data center sector. The development of MEL2 is poised to further solidify AirTrunk's position as a leading provider of hyperscale infrastructure in the region, catering to the exponential data and compute requirements driven by artificial intelligence and cloud adoption.
