Pertamina Geothermal to Build Indonesia's First Geothermal-Powered Data Centers

December 24, 2025 Indonesia is poised to host its first geothermal-powered green data centers, a landmark initiative aimed at powering the nation's booming digital economy with clean, reliable energy. The project, spearheaded by state-owned energy company PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), addresses the dual challenge of meeting skyrocketing data center energy demands while advancing the country's carbon reduction goals. PGE has announced a strategic collaboration with the Indonesia Data Center Provider Organization (IDPRO) and the University of Indonesia's School of Engineering to develop a technical and commercial roadmap for the pioneering facilities. The move represents a significant diversification for PGE, which currently operates 13 geothermal working areas with a total installed capacity of 1,932 megawatts, into the digital infrastructure sector. The initiative is a direct response to Indonesia's rapid digitalization. With internet users exceeding 212 million, national data center capacity is projected to surge from approximately 520 megawatts in 2025 to 1.8 gigawatts by 2030. Industry projections indicate that data center expansion will drive roughly 26 percent of the growth in national electricity consumption during this period. "This breakthrough is a strategic step to open up new opportunities for a low-emission digital industry in Indonesia," said PGE's Director of Exploration and Development, Edwil Suzandi, in a stock exchange disclosure. "PGE wants to be part of this journey, ensuring that Indonesia’s digital growth is built responsibly and sustainably." Industry and academic partners emphasized the project's broader significance. IDPRO Chairman Hendra Suryakusuma stated that leveraging geothermal energy tackles the critical issues of long-term energy security and systemic carbon reduction for a sector that forms the backbone of national digital infrastructure. Dalhar Susanto, Vice Dean at the University of Indonesia's School of Engineering, described the partnership as crucial momentum for applied research, calling it an opportunity to develop innovative, sustainable solutions relevant to future industrial needs. By integrating its geothermal expertise with digital infrastructure, PGE aims to position itself as a key driver of a national digital transformation that aligns with Indonesia's low-carbon economic agenda.
