EdgeMode Secures Critical Power for 1.5GW AI Data Center Platform in Spain
December 23, 2025
In a significant move for Europe's burgeoning artificial intelligence infrastructure, data center developer EdgeMode has achieved a pivotal milestone by securing a firm power supply for its planned 1.5-gigawatt (GW) AI data center platform in Spain. The development underscores the intense competition for reliable energy, which has become the foremost bottleneck for deploying large-scale AI and high-performance computing (HPC) facilities globally.
The platform, being developed through a joint venture with the Blackberry Alternative Investment Fund (BAIF), comprises five campus-style projects dedicated to AI and HPC workloads. Beyond securing power, the sites have also obtained land rights, dark fiber connectivity, and necessary construction permits, laying a comprehensive foundation for development. This progress follows the merger of EdgeMode and BAIF in July, a deal that gave BAIF stakeholders a 50% equity stake in EdgeMode and brought BAIF's portfolio of 23 development sites with a potential 4.41GW capacity under the combined entity's control.
Charlie Faulkner, CEO of EdgeMode, emphasized the strategic importance of this achievement. "Securing power across the full pipeline is a critical milestone for EdgeMode and a clear inflection point for our platform," Faulkner stated. "Power availability is the primary constraint facing AI infrastructure today, and this achievement allows us to move client and partner discussions from future capacity to deliverable, scalable solutions."
The secured power supply directly addresses a core challenge in the industry, where the massive energy demands of AI clusters often outpace grid capacity in desirable locations. EdgeMode's platform is positioned to capitalize on Spain's appeal as a data center hub, offering favorable climate and growing connectivity. The company's broader strategy includes integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems across its Spanish sites and acquiring additional solar assets to power the facilities, highlighting a focus on sustainable and resilient energy solutions.
This development signals EdgeMode's successful pivot from its origins in cryptocurrency mining to targeting colocation and HPC hosting. The company has been expanding its European footprint, recently acquiring Synthesis Analytics Production, which came with a 95MW power purchase agreement and a lease on a 20MW immersion-cooled data center in Sweden. The advancement of the Spanish platform, with its substantial scale and secured fundamentals, is poised to accelerate commercial engagements and could significantly influence the competitive landscape for AI-ready data center capacity in Southern Europe.
