TNE and Data District Forge Partnership to Power 1GW AI Data Center Pipeline in Alberta December 18, 2025 A major strategic partnership has been formed to address one of the most critical bottlenecks in the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure: power availability. UK-based Technologies New Energy (TNE) has entered into an agreement with Data District, a division of Swiss asset manager Alcral AG, to support the development of a pipeline of AI-ready data centers in the Canadian province of Alberta. The collaboration is centered on Data District's ambitious development plan, which encompasses a total pipeline of facilities with more than 1 gigawatt (GW) of planned capacity. The initial phase of this partnership is expected to involve four data center projects in the Edmonton and Calgary regions, representing a combined capacity of 240 megawatts (MW). This first-phase build-out is estimated to require an investment of approximately €780 million (US$914 million), with initial operations targeted to commence in 2026. Under the agreement, TNE will provide comprehensive support across strategy, supply chain, and project delivery. A core focus will be on securing reliable, lower-carbon power generation through integrated solutions that combine modular gas generation, battery storage systems, and complementary software. TNE will also offer advisory services on scalable, energy-efficient data center design, site selection, and ensuring secure access to power and connectivity. Furthermore, the partnership includes support for workforce expansion through Data District's training programs. The deal underscores the growing recognition that power constraints are becoming a primary limiter for AI growth, particularly for energy-intensive workloads running on advanced hardware. Julio Perez, Chief Executive Officer of TNE, stated, "Power availability is emerging as the key constraint for AI growth, particularly for AI workloads running on Nvidia hardware, and our scalable generation capability can support the rapid rollout of high-density data center infrastructure." For Data District, the partnership is a strategic move to establish a leading platform in the region. Carlos Caldas, CEO of Data District, commented, "The agreement with TNE represents a major step forward in our ambition to position Data District as a reference platform at the intersection of clean power and high-performance digital infrastructure." He added that the goal is to build a "long-term, scalable ecosystem designed to attract world-class computing workloads" to Alberta. The development signals Alberta's growing attractiveness as a data center hub, leveraging available land and energy resources to capture investment from the booming AI and high-performance computing sector. This large-scale infrastructure push is poised to anchor significant sustainable investment, employment, and technological innovation in the region for years to come. Source: datacenterdynamics
