Vantage Breaks Ground on 1.4GW Texas Data Center Campus for OpenAI's Stargate Project

In a significant move to support the escalating computational demands of artificial intelligence, Vantage Data Centers has commenced construction on a massive new data center campus in Texas. The facility, a key component of the "Stargate" expansion project led by OpenAI and Oracle, underscores the hyperscale infrastructure race driven by generative AI development.

The company announced the groundbreaking for its "Frontier" campus in Shackelford County, Texas, over the weekend. In a LinkedIn post, Vantage stated, “Part of Oracle and OpenAI’s Stargate expansion, the 1.4GW campus will lead to advancements in AI while creating significant regional economic growth, including employing more than 5,000 individuals across construction and operations.” The campus is strategically located approximately 125 miles west of Fort Worth, near Abilene, where other related Stargate infrastructure is being developed.

Upon full build-out, the 1,200-acre site will host ten single-story data centers, encompassing a total of 3.7 million square feet (343,740 square meters) and delivering a total capacity of 1.4 gigawatts. The campus is designed to support high-density AI workloads, with plans for both air- and liquid-cooled infrastructure capable of supporting more than 250kW per rack. The first building is scheduled to become operational in the second half of 2026, with the total investment in the project expected to exceed $25 billion.

This project marks a major expansion for Vantage, which is backed by DigitalBridge and Silver Lake, into the Texas market. The company had previously filed plans for developments in San Antonio but currently operates no facilities in the state. The Texas campus is one of several Stargate sites Vantage is developing, including another large-scale project in Wisconsin.

The development highlights the transformative impact of AI on digital infrastructure, pushing data center design toward unprecedented power densities and scale. Projects of this magnitude are becoming critical anchors for regional economies, promising thousands of jobs and substantial capital investment, while also posing significant challenges for local power grids and water resources.
