NTT Clears Final Hurdle for Massive German Data Center Project
December 15, 2025
In a significant move for Europe's digital infrastructure landscape, NTT Global Data Centers has received the final regulatory green light to proceed with a major new campus in Germany, underscoring the sustained demand for high-capacity computing facilities driven by cloud and AI workloads.
The city council of Nierstein has unanimously approved the development plan for NTT's "FRA6" campus, a crucial final step following an earlier unanimous approval of the land-use plan by the Rhein-Selz municipal association. The company announced the milestone over the weekend, stating the plan is expected to become legally binding upon its official publication in the first quarter of 2026. Construction on the site, a former US Army barracks known as Anderson Barracks, could begin in early 2027, targeting a 2029 launch.
The planned campus, with a total power capacity of 482 megawatts (MW) spread across approximately nine buildings, is poised to be one of the largest of its kind in Europe. It will occupy a portion of the 750,000-square-meter (8 million sq ft) Rhein-Selz Park development, located about 50 kilometers south of the key financial and connectivity hub of Frankfurt. NTT's German division, which operates four existing sites in the Frankfurt metro area with capacities ranging from 1.1MW to 80MW, will significantly expand its footprint with this project.
The approval signals strong regional support for converting former military land into critical digital infrastructure. This trend is evident elsewhere in the Frankfurt region, where other operators like Brookfield's Data4 are also developing large-scale campuses on former barracks sites. For NTT, the new campus represents a strategic expansion in one of Europe's most competitive data center markets, enabling it to capture demand from hyperscalers and enterprises requiring vast, scalable capacity. The project's scale highlights the ongoing need for substantial power and land resources to support the next generation of digital services.
