Equinix Plans Major €1.5 Billion, 150MW Data Center Campus Near Amsterdam December 11, 2025 Global colocation giant Equinix is expanding its European footprint with a significant new investment in the Netherlands, underscoring the continued demand for digital infrastructure in key connectivity hubs. The company is planning a massive 150-megawatt data center campus in Lelystad, located approximately 55 kilometers east of Amsterdam, according to local reports. The project, with an estimated value of €1.5 billion (approximately $1.7 billion), will be developed at the Flevokust Haven industrial estate. The campus is slated to comprise three two-story buildings and will be constructed in phases, with completion targeted for 2028 or 2029. Equinix is currently in the process of securing the necessary permits, with construction expected to commence next year. A key strategic aspect of the development is its direct adjacency to the Maxima power plant, an 861.1MW gas-fired facility owned by energy company Engie. Michiel Eielts, director of Equinix Benelux, confirmed the site will be directly powered by this plant. The municipality of Lelystad has designated the Flevokust Haven area for data center use since 2016, facilitating such large-scale developments. This move represents a strategic expansion for Equinix within the Netherlands, a critical European data center market. The company already operates nine facilities in the Amsterdam metropolitan area, along with single sites in Enschede and Zwolle. While Equinix announced a land acquisition in Amsterdam during its November quarterly earnings, it did not disclose details, which this Lelystad project now clarifies. The development of a campus of this scale highlights the intense pressure on power and land resources in core markets like Amsterdam. By selecting a location with dedicated power infrastructure and pre-zoned land, Equinix is positioning itself to meet sustained enterprise and cloud demand while navigating the growing constraints in traditional hub cities.
