Google Commissions $2 Billion Data Center Campus in Fort Wayne, Indiana

December 11, 2025

Google has officially brought online its massive $2 billion data center campus in Fort Wayne, Indiana, marking a significant expansion of its cloud and AI infrastructure in the U.S. Midwest. The move underscores the intense competition among hyperscalers to secure capacity for growing artificial intelligence workloads and cloud services, with Indiana emerging as a key battleground due to its available land, power resources, and strategic location.

The facility, previously known under the codename Project Zodiac, is now operational and will support critical Google services such as Google Maps, its Gemini AI platform, and a wide range of Google Cloud customers. The project, developed in partnership with utility Indiana Michigan Power Company (I&M), was first announced in April 2024. Initial plans filed with local authorities outlined a potential 12-building campus spanning more than 700 acres of land bounded by East Tillman Road, Adams Center Road, and a railroad track. While the exact number of buildings currently completed has not been disclosed, the campus is expected to create up to 200 jobs.

The development has not been without local scrutiny. Residents have raised concerns regarding environmental impact and energy consumption, prompting Google to hold a community forum on December 11 to address questions. In response to these concerns and as part of its agreement with I&M, Google has implemented a custom demand response program. This initiative will see the tech giant shift non-urgent computing tasks during periods of peak grid demand to help stabilize energy costs for other utility customers. Google has also committed to funding local water infrastructure projects and restoring a portion of the wetlands affected by construction.

The Fort Wayne campus received regulatory approval in September 2025 to expand with an additional five buildings. Its commissioning is a cornerstone of Google's broader investment strategy in Indiana, which includes another 390-acre campus under development in Morgan County. The state is witnessing an unprecedented influx of data center investments, positioning itself as a major hub for digital infrastructure. In a landmark move this November, Amazon Web Services announced a $15 billion plan for data center and AI infrastructure in Northern Indiana, supplementing an $11 billion project announced last year. Other major players like Microsoft, Meta, DataBank, and Digital Crossroads are also actively developing or operating facilities within the state, signaling a sustained industry-wide push into the region.
