Empyrion Digital Announces Major 200MW Data Center Campus in Johor, Malaysia December 9, 2025 The strategic expansion of data center capacity in Southeast Asia is accelerating, driven by the region's rapid digital transformation and the spillover of demand from constrained markets. This trend underscores the growing importance of alternative hubs that offer scalable power, favorable infrastructure, and government support to meet the needs of hyperscale cloud providers and AI-driven workloads. Asia-Pacific data center operator Empyrion Digital this week unveiled plans to develop a significant 200-megawatt (MW) campus in Johor, Malaysia. The new facility, named MY1, will be situated on a 34.9-acre plot within the SiLC Industrial Cluster in Nusajaya, Johor. The campus is designed to comprise five buildings, each with a capacity of 40MW. The company has secured key regulatory approvals, including the Electricity Supply Agreement (ESA) and a green light from Malaysia's Data Centre Task Force (DCTF). Construction is underway, with the first phase scheduled to be energized in September 2026. The initial building is expected to become operational by the fourth quarter of 2026. The site will employ a hybrid cooling architecture utilizing both air and liquid cooling technologies to support a range of densities, including AI-ready infrastructure. Mark Fong, CEO of Empyrion Digital, highlighted the strategic rationale behind the move: “Malaysia has emerged as a key destination for hyperscale data centers, driven by strong digital transformation, favourable infrastructure, and government support. MY1 reflects Empyrion Digital’s continued ambition to expand our pan-Asian platform and meet our customers’ needs for scalable, green-by-design, and AI-ready infrastructure. Johor will be a cornerstone location in this strategy.” Empyrion, launched in 2021 by Asian infrastructure investment fund Seraya Partners, is rapidly building a regional footprint. The company currently operates a 29.4MW facility in Seoul, South Korea, and a 12.5MW data center in Singapore, acquired in partnership with Malaysian conglomerate YTL. Its development pipeline includes projects in Taiwan (7MW), Bangkok, Thailand (12MW), and Tokyo, Japan (25MW). Seraya Partners, which manages $1.3 billion in assets, recently launched a dedicated investment unit focused on Japan's digital infrastructure market. The development in Johor signals a significant vote of confidence in Malaysia's data center ecosystem, which has benefited from its proximity to Singapore. While Singapore has begun to cautiously ease its moratorium on new data center developments, Johor has established itself as a compelling alternative, attracting major investments to accommodate the overspill of demand from the city-state and capture new growth from across the region.
