Meta Explores Site for Major Data Center Campus in Northern Finland

Meta Explores Site for Major Data Center Campus in Northern Finland December 8, 2025 In a significant move for the Nordic data center market, Meta Platforms, Inc. is advancing plans for a potential new data center campus in Finland. The exploration underscores the region's growing appeal to hyperscalers, driven by its abundant renewable energy resources, cool climate, and supportive infrastructure policies. According to local reports, Meta, operating through its subsidiary Valoa Networks Oy, is working with the municipality of Ii in the Northern Ostrobothnia region. The company has identified a vast 1,160-hectare site located approximately 25 kilometers north of the Ii city center for preliminary assessment. Of this total area, 475 hectares have been earmarked specifically for potential data center development. The project is currently in the early planning and due diligence phase. Ii's Mayor, Marjukka Manninen, highlighted the municipality's collaborative role, stating, "The planning process that is now starting is an example of how the municipality can, through its own work, enable future investments." She emphasized the area's production of "a significant amount of clean energy" as a key attraction for operators like Meta. The local authority is engaged with the company on zoning, environmental impact assessments, and other permitting procedures, though the final zoning decision is not expected until 2027. A final investment decision by Meta has not yet been made. If realized, the campus would mark Meta's first data center investment in Finland, expanding its existing Nordic footprint which currently includes three facilities in neighboring Sweden. The move aligns with a broader surge of data center activity in Finland beyond its capital, Helsinki. Established players like Equinix and atNorth operate there, while new entrants and international firms are announcing projects. Just last week, ASP DC announced the acquisition of a site for a planned 300-megawatt campus near Pori. Meta's serious consideration of Finland signals a strategic diversification of its European infrastructure and reinforces the Nordics' position as a critical, sustainable hub for power-intensive computing.
