Bitzero Breaks Ground on Major 1GW Data Center Campus in Finland
December 4, 2025
Bitzero, a Vancouver-based developer of sustainable digital infrastructure, has commenced construction on a major new data center campus in Kokemäki, Finland, marking a significant expansion of its European footprint. The move underscores the intensifying competition for strategic, power-rich locations capable of supporting the massive energy demands of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing workloads.
The company announced this week that it has broken ground on Phase I of the project at its nearly 100-hectare site, which was first acquired in January 2025. Approximately 15 hectares of the land are currently owned, with the remainder under option for future development. Upon full build-out, the campus has the potential to reach a substantial capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW), powered by a diversified mix of hydro-electric, nuclear, solar, and wind energy sources.
In a statement, Bitzero President and CEO Mohammed Bakhashwain emphasized the site's strategic importance, saying, "This site provides the space and power capacity we need to achieve our aggressive growth plans and deliver green compute power at scale, including the ability to host large, hyperscale AI, cloud, and Bitcoin workloads." The company, which focuses on ESG-focused infrastructure, is among a wave of firms originally in the cryptocurrency mining sector that are now pivoting to also cater to the booming AI compute market.
Bitzero's asset-heavy strategy, which involves owning its infrastructure and power resources, is a key part of its value proposition. This approach has attracted notable backers, including investor and "Shark Tank" star Kevin O'Leary, who has contributed to over $100 million in private funding secured by the company. O'Leary commented, "Unlike most competitors, Bitzero's asset-first model is a rare competitive advantage that drives efficiency and scalability, backed by real assets and resources. Because they own the infrastructure and aren't dependent on leases or oversaturated power grids, Bitzero is more agile, profitable, and better positioned for long-term value."
The Finland campus is poised to become Bitzero's single largest global facility. The company's existing portfolio includes a 40-megawatt (MW) facility in Namsskogan, Norway, currently being expanded to 110MW with a potential ceiling of 325MW, and a converted former missile base in North Dakota, USA, with 2.5MW operational and 30MW ready for rapid deployment on a site that could eventually support up to 300MW.
The development in Kokemäki highlights Finland's growing appeal as a data center hub, prized for its cool climate, political stability, and access to abundant, often renewable, electricity. However, it also arrives amid a broader industry scramble for power and land, positioning Bitzero to compete for large-scale contracts from cloud providers and AI companies seeking sustainable, high-capacity compute infrastructure in Northern Europe.
