Botswana Inaugurates First Government-Owned National Data Center

December 3, 2025

Botswana has taken a significant step in its digital sovereignty and economic development strategy with the official launch of its first national data center. The move is seen as a critical infrastructure investment to retain data locally, improve connectivity for government and private sector services, and reduce reliance on international data hubs.

The Tier III-certified facility, named the Digital Delta Data Center (DDDC), is a state-owned project located in the capital city of Gaborone. It will be operated by BoFiNet, the country's wholesale telecommunications infrastructure provider. The data center, which spans 1,000 square meters (10,763 square feet), is designed as a colocation facility with a planned capacity of 400 racks, though detailed power and IT load specifications were not immediately disclosed.

The project's groundbreaking ceremony was held in March 2021, with initial expectations for an October 2023 launch. The facility's opening comes after an approximate two-year delay, the reasons for which remain unclear. Construction was carried out by the Chinese contractor Zhong Gan, with backing from the China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation company.

Industry analysts view this development as part of a broader trend across Africa, where nations are actively building core digital infrastructure to support cloud adoption, e-government initiatives, and a growing technology sector. By hosting data domestically, Botswana aims to enhance data security, reduce latency for local users, and create a foundation for attracting international technology investments and fostering innovation within its borders.
