TNB Targets 5,000MW for Data Centers by 2035 to Bolster Malaysia's Hub Ambitions November 30, 2025 Malaysia's national utility giant, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), has outlined a strategic plan to supply up to 5,000 megawatts (MW) of power specifically for data center demand by 2035. This ambitious target is central to the country's bid to become a leading regional hub for sustainable digital infrastructure, aligning its energy transition with the rapid growth of the digital economy. Speaking at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2025, TNB's chief retail officer, Datuk Kamal Arifin A Rahman, emphasized that the key challenge for the industry is no longer choosing between affordability, reliability, and sustainability, but achieving all three simultaneously. To meet this complex demand, TNB is leveraging its substantial existing infrastructure, which includes a national generation capacity of 27,690MW, over 26,000 kilometers of transmission lines, and a retail network serving more than 10.4 million customers. The utility is deploying several key initiatives to attract and support large-scale data center investments. A cornerstone of this strategy is the "Green Lane Pathway," which streamlines the connection process, reducing the typical timeline from 36 months to just 12. This initiative was successfully demonstrated in the rapid energization of Princeton Digital Group's (PDG) flagship 190MW data center campus in Sedenak, Johor. PDG further plans a 200MW expansion in Kulai by 2027. TNB also provides a dedicated one-stop center (OSC) to facilitate all data center requirements and promotes dual-supply frameworks for enhanced reliability. Underpinning this drive is a strong commitment to renewable energy (RE), in line with Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and its 2050 target of 70% RE capacity. TNB has set its own goal of developing 10 gigawatts of RE capacity by 2030, including 500MW of solar and 2.5GW of floating solar. Kamal noted that strategic partnerships, such as those with the government to expand the Green Electricity Tariff (GET) programme and with operators like PDG, are crucial for delivering large-scale, greener data center capacity. "Through initiatives like Green Lane Pathway and OSC, TNB is also strategically positioning Malaysia as a green data centre regional hub," he stated. Source: theedgemalaysia
