Amazon Unveils Major $15 Billion Data Center Push in Indiana to Fuel AI Growth
December 1, 2025
In a significant move underscoring the intense infrastructure demands of the artificial intelligence era, Amazon has revealed plans to invest an estimated $15 billion to develop new data center campuses in Northern Indiana. This massive commitment, focused on supporting cloud computing and AI innovation, represents a major expansion of the company's footprint in the state beyond the $11 billion investment announced for St. Joseph County last year.
The project is set to add a substantial 2.4 gigawatts of data center capacity to the region. Amazon expects it to create more than 1,100 new high-skilled jobs, including roles for data center engineers, security specialists, and network experts. Furthermore, the development is projected to support thousands of additional jobs in the local supply chain, spanning construction, electrical work, and fiber-optic installation.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun hailed the agreement as "a massive win for Hoosier ratepayers," stating it would ensure a surplus in new energy development and deliver real savings. "Amazon’s historic investment shows that Indiana’s business-friendly climate continues to attract world-class employers and drive growth in our state," he said.
A key component of the initiative involves a novel partnership with utility NIPSCO. Through a newly created subsidiary, NIPSCO Generation LLC (GenCo), Amazon will fund the use of existing power lines and cover all costs for any new necessary power plants or equipment. NIPSCO President Vince Parisi emphasized this framework would save existing customers approximately $1 billion over 15 years without raising their rates, while strengthening the regional grid.
David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, reaffirmed the company's long-term commitment to Indiana. "By expanding our advanced cloud infrastructure in Indiana, we are investing in Indiana's technological future through job creation, skills training initiatives, and community engagement programs," he stated. Amazon plans to collaborate with local educational institutions to develop training programs for data center and broadband careers.
The new AI and cloud campuses will join Amazon's extensive operations in Indiana, which already include numerous fulfillment centers and data centers. Since 2010, the company has invested over $31.3 billion in the state, creating more than 24,500 direct jobs and contributing nearly $30 billion to the state's GDP, according to company data. This latest investment signals a strategic deepening of its infrastructure to power the next wave of AI-driven services.
