Digital Realty Commences Construction on 16MW FRA20 Data Center in Frankfurt

November 30, 2025

Digital Realty, a leading global provider of cloud- and carrier-neutral data center solutions, has broken ground on its latest facility in Frankfurt, Germany, underscoring the sustained demand for digital infrastructure in one of Europe's most critical connectivity hubs. The expansion comes as enterprises and cloud providers increasingly seek scalable, AI-ready capacity to support growing computational workloads.

The company announced this week the start of construction for FRA20, a new data center situated within its Digital Park Fechenheim campus in eastern Frankfurt. The facility is planned to be developed in two phases, with the first phase expected to become operational in the spring of 2027. Upon full completion, FRA20 is projected to deliver approximately 16 megawatts of IT capacity across more than 8,100 square meters (87,188 square feet) of space.

Volker Ludwig, Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Digital Realty in Central Europe, commented on the strategic move: “Our continued investment in Frankfurt reflects both the strategic importance of the location and the growing demand for AI-optimized, sustainable digital infrastructure. With FRA20 and the ongoing development of Digital Park Fechenheim, we are scaling up a future-ready ecosystem to support our customers’ most critical workloads.”

The FRA20 project is a key component of the broader Digital Park Fechenheim campus, a site with a significant historical and architectural legacy as the former headquarters of German mail-order company Neckermann. Five of the campus's data centers, including the new FRA20 and the recently launched FRA18, will be housed within the renovated Egon-Eiermann building, a modernist architectural landmark originally constructed in 1959. Digital Realty's predecessor, Interxion, acquired the site in 2020.

When the entire campus is fully developed—a milestone the company suggests could be reached as early as 2028—it is slated to host a total of 11 data centers. The final build-out aims to provide an immense 100,000 square meters (1.07 million square feet) of IT area and a combined capacity of 200 megawatts, cementing Frankfurt's status as a premier destination for data-intensive operations in Europe.
