New AI Data Center Firm Volt Launches with Global Expansion Ambitions

October 28, 2025

Volt, a new developer and operator of specialized AI data centers, officially launched this week with its initial operations based in the Netherlands and a strategic roadmap for international expansion into the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

The company is led by Han de Groot, a co-founder of Dutch data center firm Switch Datacenters and head of the De Groot Family Office. In a statement on LinkedIn, de Groot outlined his vision for the company, stating the goal is to build "AI Factories, built to make countries AI makers, not AI takers."

Volt's initial offering provides 14 megawatts (MW) of capacity from the Switch Datacenters AMS4 facility in Amsterdam. The company has already identified a pipeline of five additional projects.

A significant part of Volt's European strategy is tied to the Dutch bid to host one of the European Union's planned 300MW "AI gigafactories." If successful, this supercomputing cluster would be integrated into Volt's portfolio.

Beyond the initial Amsterdam site, the company's expansion plans are concrete and multi-national. In Europe, Volt intends to take 42MW of space in a new Switch data center, likely the under-construction AMS5 facility near Amsterdam. Furthermore, the company is embarking on a joint venture with Switch in Poland to secure between 30MW and 100MW at a planned 90MW data center near Warsaw, with construction slated to begin in 2026.

The firm's global ambitions extend across the Atlantic, with plans to occupy 400MW at a data center currently under development in Dallas, Texas. In the Middle East, Volt is in discussions for a 129MW project in the UAE.

Volt will offer a range of services, from providing a powered shell for clients to a fully managed AI platform, and will facilitate customer access to GPUs from leading suppliers like Nvidia and AMD.

The launch positions Volt to compete in Amsterdam, one of Europe's most established data center markets, albeit one where growth has been tempered by a development moratorium imposed in 2019.
