French technology firm VSORA announced on Monday the production launch of its Jotunn8 artificial intelligence (AI) inference chip, engineered to deliver breakthrough efficiency and scalability for next-generation data center applications.
With the Jotunn8 now in production, VSORA positions itself as the sole European company competing directly with leading U.S. tech giants in the AI inference chip market. The company asserts that while the Jotunn8 matches the raw computational power of the most advanced solutions available, it achieves more than three times the real-world performance while consuming less than half the power. This combination provides a decisive advantage in operational efficiency, energy savings, and sustainability for modern data centers.
The launch addresses the accelerating demand for chips capable of running AI models efficiently, securely, and affordably. AI inference—the process of using trained models to generate responses, predictions, or decisions—has become a foundational technology, powering everything from virtual assistants to autonomous vehicles.
VSORA's Jotunn8 (J8) chip is designed to redefine cost-effective, high-performance AI inference at scale. Its purpose-built architecture is engineered to overcome the inherent limitations of GPUs, which are predominantly optimized for AI training. In contrast, the Jotunn8 is specialized for inference, enabling rapid decision-making with minimal energy consumption.
The chip delivers 3,200 teraflops of compute power at a utilization rate exceeding 50%, all while operating at 50% lower power consumption than rival solutions. This performance shatters the barriers of conventional GPUs and achieves real-world results that surpass today's top-tier chips, according to the company. Scalable by design, the J8 chip can be seamlessly integrated into existing data center and AI infrastructure, setting a new standard for efficient inference computing.
To bring the chip to market, VSORA is partnering with leading global semiconductor manufacturers, ensuring quality, scalability, and access to cutting-edge fabrication technologies. The firm is also collaborating with strategic stakeholders to prepare for large-scale industrial adoption.
Full volume production of the Jotunn8 is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2026. Pricing details will be made available upon request.
