U.S.-based global data center operator Equinix Inc. is significantly expanding its operations in Brazil, which the company's leadership has identified as a priority market, a senior executive announced on Thursday.
Eduardo Zago, Equinix's managing director for Latin America, detailed the expansion during an industry event in Rio de Janeiro. He stated that the company currently operates eight data centers in Brazil, with a ninth facility already under construction. All existing and planned sites are concentrated in the country's economic heartland, the southeastern states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
The expansion underscores Brazil's growing appeal as a hub for digital infrastructure. The nation is positioning itself to capitalize on the global surge in data demand, partly driven by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, from which firms like Equinix are benefiting.
Further signaling its long-term commitment, Zago revealed that Equinix has proactively acquired five additional land parcels for potential future development. While there are no immediate, concrete plans for these sites, the acquisitions provide the company with strategic flexibility to scale its capacity in direct response to market demand.
"Brazil is a priority region for us," Zago said, emphasizing the country's strategic importance. "It's a market where there is no lack of space nor money," he added, noting that the company is currently in a "strong expansion" phase within the nation.
The Brazilian government's policy initiatives are also playing a key role in attracting such investment. Officials are seeking to establish the country as a sustainable infrastructure hub, leveraging its abundant supply of renewable energy—a critical factor for energy-intensive data centers. To further lure capital, the government has proposed a federal tax exemption on data center-related equipment.
