Hitachi and OpenAI Forge Strategic Partnership to Power Next-Generation AI Infrastructure

October 21, 2025

In a significant move to advance global artificial intelligence capabilities, Hitachi, Ltd. and OpenAI, Inc. announced on October 2, 2025, that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership. This collaboration is centrally focused on building next-generation AI infrastructure and accelerating the expansion of data centers worldwide. The agreement brings together Hitachi's extensive industrial expertise and OpenAI's pioneering AI technologies to address the growing demands of the AI era.

Under this new framework, the two companies will jointly develop plans across several key areas, combining their respective strengths to advance sustainable data center operations. A primary objective is to accelerate the deployment of AI technologies that help solve pressing societal challenges. The partnership will explore solutions both outside and within the data center environment. Externally, the collaboration will focus on minimizing the load on power transmission networks, securing the supply of critical and long-lead-time equipment, and standardizing prefabricated, modular data center designs to drastically shorten construction timelines.

Internally, Hitachi and OpenAI will explore collaboration on the design and supply of essential infrastructure, such as advanced cooling systems and storage solutions. This is critical for supporting the fast and reliable deployment of AI data centers that require immense computational power. Furthermore, Hitachi plans to explore deeper integration of OpenAI's large language models (LLMs) into its own Lumada solutions, including the HMAX platform. This integration is expected to significantly enhance the value and capabilities of Hitachi's digital offerings for its customers.

Hitachi Group brings formidable assets to this alliance, with its global leadership in power grids, clean energy, cooling technologies, and data management. This background uniquely positions the company to support the massive expansion of AI infrastructure. Demonstrating this commitment, the Hitachi Group has already announced investments exceeding USD 1 billion in the U.S. alone to meet the surging demand for transformers and high-voltage equipment driven by AI data center growth. The company is also accelerating the global rollout of its HMAX solutions, which combine AI with deep domain expertise to tackle complex customer and societal issues.

Executive commentary underscores the strategic importance of the partnership. Toshiaki Tokunaga, President and CEO of Hitachi, Ltd., stated, "Through our Social Innovation Business, Hitachi has long contributed to creating a more sustainable society. While AI is driving rapid innovation, it also brings challenges such as power shortages. Through this strategic partnership, we aim to deliver the full capabilities of One Hitachi to support OpenAI's groundbreaking technologies, working together toward the realization of a harmonized society." Echoing this sentiment, Tadao Nagasaki, President of OpenAI Japan, Ltd., said, "OpenAI's mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Our strategic partnership with Hitachi is an important step toward that vision. By combining the strengths of both organizations, we will co-create innovative solutions that address global challenges."
