Would take up 123 acres of land
A proposal for a data center in Matthews, North Carolina, is being considered.
The facility, dubbed ‘Project Accelerate,’ would require the rezoning of multiple land parcels totaling 123 acres along East John Street. Details about estimated capacity and size of the facility were not disclosed.
The town’s Planning Board was supposed to consider whether to recommend the rezoning application for approval on September 23, but decided to postpone their decision until the conclusion of a public hearing on the matter. This is set to take place on October 13.
Local opposition has emerged in response to the proposal, with residents citing concerns about power, property tax, noise pollution, and the impact on the environment.
Little information is available about the applicants East John Master Development and Matthews DC LLC. Documents show that the pair are supported by real estate consultant Engineered Land Solutions LLC.
A spokesperson for the developer sent a statement to WBTV, saying that the goal was to “position the Town of Matthews to benefit from this growing sector with Project Accelerate. We are taking a thoughtful approach that results in minimal commuter traffic, limited environmental impacts, and full responsibility for Duke Energy upgrades required for this project.”
Matthews is a town located southeast of Charlotte, North Carolina’s most populous city and the state’s data center hotspot.
