Wind project expected to be commissioned in mid 2027
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Gentari, a Malaysian-based renewable developer, for 80MW of wind power from a project in Tamil Nadu, India.
The wind project is expected to commence operations in mid-2027 and will generate approximately 300,000MWh of power on an annual basis.
"As the world's largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally, AWS continues to work towards our goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Our collaboration with Gentari, a Malaysian clean energy leader expanding its regional impact, brings us a step closer towards that,” said Jeff Johnson, managing director, ASEAN, AWS.
The project is part of the larger Karur Wind Development, a major wind energy zone in Tamil Nadu. In addition to the Gentari project, the Karur region is also home to a 100.8MW project developed by Everrenew Energy, as well as a 198MW project being developed by Tata Power. The project also includes the Adani Karur Transmission project, a large-scale transmission system that has the capacity to transport up to 2.5GW of wind power from the zone.
The PPA follows a collaboration agreement signed between the two companies back in 2023, which set the parameters for sustainability and decarbonization initiatives between the two firms.
Commenting on the PPA, Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari, said: “This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing practical, scalable, and clean energy solutions – vital for Asia and the world’s move towards a low-carbon future. Through projects like the Karur wind development, we are not just adding renewable capacity – we are addressing real energy needs where it matters most.
"Together with AWS, we are focused on delivering impact through action and enabling the broader energy ecosystem to transition. Gentari is excited to support AWS in their net-zero journey, and we welcome more partners to join us in building a more robust clean energy ecosystem.”
AWS has signed several PPAs in the Indian market as it continues to expand in the South Asian country. In February, the company signed two PPAs in India for a combined 199MW. The first was signed with CleanMax, for energy from a 100MW onshore wind farm currently under development in Koppal, Karnataka. The second was with BluePine Energy, for energy from a 99MW wind project.
The power is expected to support the company’s expansion in the region, following a commitment earlier this year to invest $8.3 billion in developing cloud infrastructure for its AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region in Maharashtra, India.
AWS entered the Indian market in 2016 when it launched its Mumbai cloud region. It followed this up in 2022, launching a further cloud region in Hyderabad.
Gentari is the renewable energy arm of Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas. According to its website, the company has more than 8GW of installed and under-construction renewable assets across the world.
In May, Gentari signed a series of PPAs with Telekom Malaysia to power six of the telco’s sites across Malaysia.
