Indian operator Bharti Airtel’s data centre arm, Nxtra by Airtel, has signed a deal with Ampin Energy Transition for a renewable energy push.
The deal involves 125.65 MW of solar-wind hybrid energy through Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) connected plants, which will allow for “low-carbon computing” and reduce Nxtra emissions by ~149,156 tCO2e annually, we’re told. The project also means the total renewable energy partnership between the two companies has crossed over 200 MW, apparently.
The additional capacity will be piped into Nxtra in two phases, each through captive solar-wind power projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka, respectively. Ampin has already been supplying solar power to Nxtra through intra-state, open access in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha.
The new job will see Ampin add 11 new states as well as new technologies such as large-scale ISTS renewable energy supply and the supply of renewable energy from a single Independent Power Producer (IPP).
“Sustainability is not just a commitment—it is our responsibility and our opportunity to lead,” said Ashish Arora, CEO – Nxtra by Airtel. “By powering our digital infrastructure with over 200 MW of renewable energy through our partnership with Ampin, we are setting new standards for the industry. This achievement highlights our leadership in using ISTS-backed clean energy to power our facilities sustainably, boosting reliability and ensuring tangible climate impact. At Nxtra, we are determined to drive innovation and inspire action, ensuring that our operations not only support India’s digital growth but also protect its environment for generations to come.”
Pinaki Bhattacharyya, Founder, MD and CEO, Ampin Energy Transition, added: “With this partnership, we demonstrate that through a seamless blend of inter-state and intra-state renewable energy solutions backed by a pan-India presence, we can take any customer through a nearly 100% energy transition. Nxtra by Airtel, a leader in the data and fast-growing data centre space shares our vision for sustainability and we are proud to make data centres green by this association.”
In other green initiative news today, Openreach has announced it has put its 5000th electric van on the road. The fibreco has pledged to upgrade the vast majority of its 23,000 fleet as such, and says the 5,000 EVs are expected to save more than 10,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, which it has somehow worked out is the equivalent of removing over 7,000 petrol cars from UK roads each year.
“As we continue our work to connect homes and businesses to the UK’s most reliable broadband technology, we also want to help build a cleaner, greener future,” said Clive Selley, CEO of Openreach.
“We know the impact our operations have, so seeing our 5000th electric van on the road is a proud moment for everyone at Openreach. By continuing to upgrade our fleet, and by installing EV chargers in our engineers' homes and our operational sites - we’re removing barriers to adoption, improving air quality, and supporting the communities we serve.”
It plans to add a further 2000 EVs to its fleet by the end of March 2026, and has so far installed 2500 EV charging points at operational sites and engineers’ homes.
