Real estate firm Atlas Capital Group may develop 1m square foot data center in Connecticut

Facility would be located in suburb of Bloomfield.

Real estate firm Atlas Capital Group may develop a one-million-square-foot data center in Connecticut.

The potential facility, which would offer 900,000 sq ft (84,000 sqm) of space, and a 127,000 sq ft (12,000 sqm) substation, would be built on a 44-acre land parcel located at 132 Griffin Road North in the suburb of Bloomfield, which is north of Hartford.

The plan first became known at a meeting held on June 26 by the Town Plan and Zoning Commission, where Atlas Capital gave an “informal presentation regarding a potential development of a data center.” This was followed by a press release on July 3.

The land parcel, which was a former tobacco field, is currently vacant.

Director of planning and zoning in Bloomfield, Jonathan Colman, told Greenwich Time that the proposal was still in the early conceptual stage. He added: “One of the questions we want to answer is what the future reuse for this building will be when the technology becomes obsolete.”

It is unclear whether the New York-based Atlas Capital will be the end user. The firm’s existing properties consist of residential, office, and mixed-use developments, as well as the Los Angeles Times Printing Plant.

According to Datacentermap, there are 59 data centers in Connecticut, with the majority of facilities being concentrated in Norwich.
