Madhya Pradesh plans to build 1GW AI-ready data center

The central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh (MP) is contemplating building a 1GW AI-ready data center. This was revealed during the Madhya Pradesh Business Forum held in Barcelona recently, where the state government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Spain headquartered company that provides liquid cooling solutions to data centers.

The MoU was reportedly signed between the Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (MPSEDC) and Submer Technologies. According to a report in The Times of India, Submer will invest in construction, research and development , and technical areas in the state, while the MP State Electronics Development Corporation will finalise suitable land, basic infrastructure, policy support, and govt formalities for the project. No further details were revealed about the location, investment, capacity or time line for the project.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said, “At the Invest in Madhya Pradesh Business Forum held today in Barcelona, the capital of Spain, detailed discussions were held with entrepreneurs on the immense potential for investment and trade in Madhya Pradesh, and they were invited to explore opportunities in the state. On this occasion, an MoU was also signed between @MPSeDC_DST and @submertech.”

Central India is an emerging data center market with data centers coming up in cities like Indore (MP), and Raipur (Chhattisgarh) among other areas. In an interview to W.Media during Chennai Cloud & Datacenter Convention 2025, Narendra Sen (Founder & CEO, RackBank) who has established facilities in both these cities said, “We chose Indore because it is a more sustainable location in the center of the country. From the latency perspective it made a lot of sense.” He further explained that affordable power was abundant in the region, and the regulatory environment was friendly, which further tilted the scales in favour of Central India.

At present however, Mumbai and Chennai remain the two biggest data center markets in India with Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR, and Kolkata also accounting for significant growth. Overall, India’s data center capacity could go up to 1.8GW by the end of 2027 as per the findings of a JLL report titled India Data Center Market Dynamics that also found that India’s data center capacity surged past the 1GW mark at the end of 2024, and stood at around 1030 MW (live IT load) of which 993 MW was occupied.
