Teams up with geo-distributed cloud storage enabler Cubbit
Italian Edge data center provider Rai Way has deployed Cubbit's storage technology across its data centers.
The company has integrated geo-distributed cloud storage enabler Cubbit's DS3 Composer technology into its data center platform, starting with five data centers in Italy, located in Venice, Turin, Milan, Genoa, and Florence.
The solution currently offers a storage capacity of five petabytes for Rai Way customers and is designed for high resilience, data sovereignty, and availability.
Cubbit's cloud storage technology fragments stored data into encrypted pieces, which can then be distributed across multiple network nodes, meaning that no file is ever exposed in full and remains available even during a cyberattack or outage.
The company's S3 cloud storage can slot into any infrastructure and policy framework, from hybrid cloud to the Edge.
Michele Gallo, head of operations data center at Rai Way, said: “The partnership with Cubbit, a technology leader in the field, strengthens Rai Way’s strategy to provide Italian enterprises and public sector organizations with the solutions and infrastructure needed to accelerate their digital transformation. The synergy between our next-generation, geographically distributed data centers, the proprietary fiber network connecting them, and Cubbit’s innovative technology ensures a secure and resilient solution for data storage and preservation.”
Alessandro Cillario, co-CEO and co-founder of Cubbit, added: “The partnership between Cubbit and Rai Way confirms that our technology is becoming a leading standard for data storage. At Cubbit, we identify strategic partners in key industry verticals and equip them with our technology to support their business growth.
"This approach enables end customers to benefit from greater security, resilience, and cost efficiency - while continuing to rely on the trusted relationships they already have with our partners. Following our collaboration with Leonardo in the defense sector, we are now proud to enable Rai Way to offer the best-in-class services in the media and entertainment market.”
Rai Way provides the broadcasting infrastructure to the Italian state television company Rai. The company launched its first five Edge data centers in November 2024 with 1.6MW of total capacity, though it eventually plans to deploy 18 Edge data centers with 3.4MW of capacity, plus a 4MW data center in Milan and a 40MW data center in Rome.
In early 2024, Rai Way committed to investing €140 million ($151.6m) in developing data centers in the country. Oracle has since signed an agreement to deploy its AI hardware in Rai Way's data centers, giving customers access to Oracle's database services, cloud computing, disaster recovery, and AI applications at Rai Way's data centers.
Cubbit raised $12.5 million in a funding round in July 2024 led by LocalGlobe and ETF Partners. Other investors include Verve Ventures, 2100 Ventures, Hydra, Growth Engine, Eurenergia, and Moonstone.
