National Bank of Bahrain launches data center

18 month project is completed

The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has launched a new data center.

The facility is the result of an 18-month effort to transform the bank's infrastructure, with support from the Central Bank of Bahrain.

The data center is Tier III design certified by Uptime Institute and located on the 6th floor of NBB's headquarters in Manama, Bahrain.

The project involved modernizing legacy systems and was completed over eight phased migration activities.

NBB Group chief executive Usman Ahmed said: “The new data center represents NBB’s continued investment in infrastructure that delivers long-term resilience."

“Delivering a transformation of this scale required synchronised execution from teams working across multiple phases to ensure a smooth transition. Every aspect of this major project was guided by a commitment to providing a frictionless and stable experience for customers. We are incredibly proud of what the NBB team and its partners have built together.”

According to NBB, the data center will help NBB to meet its ESG goals and has "energy optimized technology" embedded directly into its core infrastructure, though it does not offer any details.

NBB claims to be the only bank in Bahrain operating a Tier III-certified data center.

NBB previously migrated its core IT operations to a Batelco data center in 2021. DCD has reached out to NBB to see if the bank is still a customer, or if the newly launched data center represents an exit from the Batelco facility

According to DataCenterMap, Bahrain has seven data centers in four locations - Manama, Askar, Saar, and Zallaq. Operators include Batelco, Electronia, and Amazon Web Services. STC Group subsidiaries STC Bahrain and Center3 are also developing a data center park in the Kingdom.

Beyon Group and Oracle signed an agreement earlier this year to develop a sovereign cloud solution in Bahrain.
