Around 300 racks to be added
Japanese Internet Service Provider (ISP) IIJ has expanded the capacity of its Matsue data center.
Matsue is the capital city of Shimane Prefecture, west of Osaka, Japan.
A modular building has been installed in the data center, adding approximately 300 racks worth of capacity to an existing capacity of 400 racks. It will add around 2,000 sqm (21,500 sq ft) of floor area to the campus.
The additional capacity, which has been under construction since February 2024, became available for use this month.
The Matsue facility is composed of two sites. The modular building will be added to the first site, which is around 1,000 sqm (10,700 sq ft) and houses approximately 100 racks and became operational in April 2011. The second site, which is around 1,500 sqm (16,000 sqft) and offers around 300 racks, was opened in November 2013.
Founded in 1992, IIJ was the country’s first ISP. It operates around 17 locations in Japan and five more internationally.
IIJ also offers modular container and micro data center (MDC) services, the latter in partnership with ZellaDC. They operate MDCs in Japan, one in Iceland, and have explored the possibility of deploying another in Kenya.
KDDI acquired an 11.5 percent stake in IIJ in 2023.
