Details lacking on planned project
Thailand’s National Telecom (NT) and local renewable energy firm BCPG have partnered to develop a data center.
Announced this week, no actual details of the planned facility or facilities have been shared. The partnership will reportedly support cloud technologies for the government and private sector.
Rawee Boonsinsuk, BCPG CEO, said: “This collaboration with NT is considered a new S-Curve for the company in entering the sustainable data center service business, which has high growth potential and is important for driving the country’s digital economy. BCPG is ready to further develop our power plant project to support the growth of the data center in the future.”
NT was formed in 2021 via the merger of two other state-owned telcos; CAT Telecom and TOT Public Company Limited. NT’s data center unit, NT Data Center, offers colocation and hosting services out of eight facilities in operation and development across Bangkok, Si Racha, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Hat Yai. NT also operates multiple cable landing sites and a satellite teleport.
The four live data center sites – Bangkok, Nonthaburi (x2), and Si Racha – offer a combined 7.1MW of capacity across 5,100 sqm (54,895 sq ft).
Sites in the Phra Khanong (currently 150 racks) area of Bangkok, as well as Chiang Mai (25 racks), Khon Kaen (25 racks), and Hat Yai (40 racks) are all listed as undergoing renovation and due for relaunch in June 2026.
Colonel Sanphachai Huvanandana, NT’s CEO, added: “As a national digital infrastructure provider, NT believes that the sustainable data center is an important step in expanding telecommunications and digital services to drive a sustainable digital economy. Having a data center that uses clean energy is not just an option, but a necessity to support government data and organizations that want to move towards net zero.”
Last year, NT filed for approval to develop two more data centers as part of a $145 million expansion plan. The company was looking for external partners to develop sites in Klong Toei and Ngamwongwan.
In 2023, NT partnered with Indian operator CtrlS for a 150MW campus and teleport in the Chonburi area of Bangkok. That site is seemingly yet to go live.
BCPG has 1.18GW of capacity in operation across solar, wind, hydro, and natural gas capacity, with another 872.5MW in development across Thailand, Philippines, Laos, and the US. The company currently has 21 solar power plant projects in 12 provinces of Thailand, totaling 200MW (12MW in development).
