BrightRay launches data center in Johor, Malaysia

Company launches first phase of 90MW campus

Malaysian pre-fab data center firm BrightRay has launched its first data center in Johor.

“We're proud to mark a significant milestone today: the official commissioning of our first flagship data center, the MY-01 Data Center in Malaysia,” the company said on LinkedIn this week. “This isn't just a project; it's a huge step forward for BrightRay, and a clear sign of our commitment to Malaysia's digital future.”

Located in the Sedenak Tech Park (SteP), MY-01 is the first of three facilities planned for the campus, with two more data centers already scheduled for deployment. At full build-out, the campus will total 90MW across 70,000 sqm (753,473 sq ft) and capacity for 10,000 racks.

The three-story facility uses BrightRay’s proprietary Full Prefab Modular Building Data Center Solution and was delivered in eight months.

Last year, Chinese data center developer and operator Shanghai DC-Science Co. was reported to be seeking a private loan for a data center project in Johor known as Brightray DC. It’s unclear if DC-Science is involved in this BrightRay project.

Located close to the border with Singapore, Johor is quickly becoming a data center hotspot as developers and operators look to secure overspill from Singapore amid ongoing capacity issues.

Other developers and operators in Johor include PDG, AirTrunk, Equinix, Keppel, ChinData's Bridge DC, STT GDC, and Yondr.
