Google signs 600MW solar energy deal in South Carolina

Working with EnergyRe again.

Google has signed an energy deal to procure renewable energy credits (RECs) in South Carolina.

Renewables developer EnergyRe has signed a renewable energy agreement that allows Google to invest in and purchase RECs from a portfolio of more than 600 MW of new solar and solar with storage projects being developed by EnergyRe in South Carolina.

"Strengthening the grid by deploying more reliable and clean energy is crucial for supporting the digital infrastructure that businesses and individuals depend on,” said Amanda Peterson Corio, head of data center energy, Google. “Our collaboration with EnergyRe will help power our data centers and the broader economic growth of South Carolina."

“This agreement is a milestone in EnergyRe’s mission to develop innovative and impactful clean energy solutions for the future,” added Miguel Prado, CEO of EnergyRe. “We’re honored to partner with Google to help advance their ambitious sustainability and decarbonization objectives while delivering dependable, locally sourced clean energy to meet growing energy demands.”

The deal is Google’s second with EnergyRe, which combined a total of more than 1GWac of capacity. Last year Google signed a 12-year PPA with EnergyRe to purchase energy from an unnamed 435MW solar project.

This year Google has signed PPAs across the US, Asia, and Europe with the likes of Shell, CIP, Baseload Capital, Exus, Leeward, and Apex. The company has also signed multiple carbon capture and removal deals.

EnergyRe has some 16GW of renewable energy capacity in development across the US. The company is an affiliate of US real estate firm Related Companies, with Glentra Capital, Novo Holdings, and PKA owning a minority stake.
